How It Works

To understand how to deploy the brain’s power to initiate and sustain a behavioral change, you first need to understand how it works. The brain is our most complex organ; it is arguably the most wondrous as well because it houses who we perceive ourselves to be and directs our daily actions.

There are an estimated 100 billion neurons firing off 100 trillion messages to each other over the course of day. These messages, also known as synapses, create neural pathways that produce certain behaviors. When a behavior is practiced many times, it is given a high priority in the brain for either for pleasure seeking or pain avoidance. Behaviors that are performed only once will not form as solid a habit and will take a lower priority in the brain. Behaviors that are performed frequently will take on a greater priority in the brain if they are formed as part of an individual’s identity. The neural pathways that create behaviors are often compared to a highway system—there are many different ways to get to your destination.

At Exceptional You, our coaches harness various pathways in the brain as leverage to help achieve the changes you are seeking.
